| The Government needs to write to all women who have ever paid the reduced stamp: There are about 1.4 million women still of working age who have ever paid the stamp, and in 2000 there were about 200,000 women still paying reduced contributions. Many women are reaching retirement to discover with a shock that their pension is worth less than they thought. This suggests that people are often unaware of the consequences of paying the reduced stamp, and the Government should at the very least write and alert them. For many women, there may still be time to make alternative arrangements to boost their pension entitlements.
